Thaipusam at Batu Caves - Serie 3 (Final)

1. Plenty of tourists
2. More tourists
3. Guess who?
View all 12 photos...
I could go on and on and on as I have plenty more photos taken. But then, I think the combination of Boogey, Red and my fotopages have covered plenty. So in this final serie, I am showing the other side of Thaipusam - the tourists and photographers.

1. Veteran couple

2. More tourists

I overheard a lady made a remark to her friend, "This year there are more journalists than there are kavadi bearers".

3. Guess who

I think she was referring to the photographers, there were a great number of photographers. The tourist photographers were easy to identify. They would be the foreigners with point-and-shoots.

4. The P&S
Then there were the local photographers, toting DSLRs, big camera bags, tripods and photographer vest.

5. Hot lens

No wonder this group of people were mistaken as journalists, yours truly included. And then there was this lady who I couldn't really figure out. You be the judge yourself.

6. Ummmm....

Of the many photographers, there were many styles present. It was almost like watching kungfu flicks. Please vote on your favorite stance. Enjoy..!!!

7. Shooting Nikon FM-2 stance

8. Monkey stance

9. Clawing Tiger stance

10. Guppy Look stance

11. Leaning Dragon stance

Yes, there were many tourists at Batu Caves. Many even climbed the steps into the main cave. There were moments where I thought I was in Europe. Hahaha...

12. MORE tourists

another vote for #11. that's a killer armpit.

Thaipusam at Batu Caves - Serie 2

1. This guy just went into trance.
2. He stuck his tongue out and the priest placed the needle.
3. ... and it went through the tongue.

The Piercing.

This serie is on the act and process of body piercing. Not for the tame hearted.

The devotee made a short prayer and then went into trance. He then stuck his tongue out and the priest placed the needle on the tongue.

The priest applied pressure and pushed the needle through.

Do view all the seven photos in this serie and leave your comment.

lovely shot.

Thaipusam at Batu Caves - Serie 1

1. Full moon at Batu Caves
2. Girl with her Paal Kudam (milk offering)
3. Kavadi bearer
View all 34 photos...
I joined throes of photographers to capture moments of Hindu devotees making their Thaipusam offerings at Batu Caves, Gombak. It was the first for me and it was exhilarating.

Join me as I periodically add new photos to this entry. I shall be uploading six photos at a time. Shooting in low light, ISO 1600, slow shutter and built in flash was very challenging.

2. Girl with her Pall Kudam

11. Kavadi bearer in a trance

14. Lady in a trance

22. Giving blessings

29. A family affair

33. Girl cleansing self

34. Girl's happy day

We went to Singapore Zoo last December. Only found time to edit and post today.

Enjoy the pics... mostly of the family. Animal pics mostly bit blurry.. and humans are a lot more fun to shoot at. Literally speaking.

Pahang Flood 2007 - Temerloh

View all 18 photos...
The monsoon of 2007 brought heavy rainfall to Malaysia causing major flood in three states - Pahang, Kelantan and Johor. Some other parts of the country were also underwater but none were devastated as bad as these three. Worse hit was Pahang.

I was in Temerloh during the height of the flood to assist the local authorities in coordination and relief activities. The journey started from Petaling Jaya with five vehicles and an airboat. We took the East Coast Highway which was only open to 4x4 and heavy vehicles only. KM 113 of the highway was submerged 1/2 meter under water.

We took the Temerloh exit and passed through a few kampungs. Here is a hut by a football pitch. It was approximately 3 meters under water.

This was the Flood Operations Room at the District Office of Temerloh. These four were amateur radio volunteers manning the communication at the ops room, linked with the Ops Room at the Temerloh Police District HQ, MARES Command Center in KL and other units operating in the district.

Partial list of the relocation centres, affected villages and victims, and other information.

A house in Temerloh with the first floor submerged.

Household and furniture to higher ground.

A gas station partially submerged.

"Warp six. Engage!" The airboat was from Hoveresque, in partnership with MARES.

A football stadium turned water polo pool.

Mobilizing jet-skis. Jet-skis were used for reconnaissance of affected areas.

Fitting up the jet-ski driver with communication equipment.

Based on the reconnaissance report, a larger craft with food supplies was deployed.

A two-person rescue jet-ski - more powerful than the recreational type.

The jet-skis were from Xplore Force, in partnership with MARES.

Unloading food supplies at Kg Sanggang.

This stretch was about 4 feet under water.

A girl helping her family salvaging flood damaged household items and furniture.

A young entrepreneur's catch. These leeches can fetch a price of RM50 per kilogram.
